A drama about drama. Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s and Richard Strauss’ second joint work, Ariadne auf Naxos was conceived as an appendix to Molière’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme in 1911–1912. Later the authors augmented the one-act opera with a prologue, which explains how a commedia dell’arte company appeared at the cave at Naxos where Ariadne, whom Theseus had left, is waiting for death. The main theme of the opera is how to create something new from the anxious waiting for love and death again and again in the spirit of the will to live.
PREMIERE: 17 MAY, 2013.
