Coming on 19th January - The Flying Dutchman

The Hungarian State Opera launches the year of 2013 - and the Wagner bicentenary - with the opening of a completely new production of  Richard Wagner’ Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman). Th uniqueness of this production is that the original version written in 1841 in Paris will be staged this time. The premiere and the 3 subsequent performances will be conducted by Ralf Weikert.

The Flying Dutchman marked a turning point in Wagner's career as an opera composer in the form of the realisation that his updated style would inevitably lead to a radical change in the operatic genre. On completion of his first draft in Paris Wagner decided that it would be more appropriate to describe the new work not as an opera, but as a “dramatic ballad”. The Hungarian State Opera returns to this less frequently performed version for its 2013 première. Here, the director's concept is portrayed particularly starkly, according to which every aspect of the piece – even the most mundane – is afforded a mythical dimension. The entire opera is therefore dominated by a mystical reverence that colours it throughout and produces a bright glow even in moments of the greatest realism. To reach that purpose the director uses 21st century tools like projected images through the whole story to express the antagonism of ’sea and shore, wandering and awaiting, damnation and redemption.’

The Dutchman will be sung by Thomas Gazheli while Georg (Erik) will be sung by American tenor Corey Bix. Senta will be played by the world-renowed Hungarian soprano, Georgina Lukacs
