Mihály Kálmándi | Opera Singer

As a child he studied to be a pianist and also learned to play the classical guitar. He began his vocal studies at the age of 17 with Eduárd Rudolf in Arad (Romania), and later graduated from G. Dima Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca (Romania) as a student of Julian Jurja. He regularly participated in Pavel Liszians master classes in Weimar. After moving to Budapest, he studied briefly with Ilona Adorján, and later continued his studies with dr. Jenő Sipos. Since 1988, he has been a soloist with the Hungarian State Opera where he has sung the greatest baritone roles of operatic literature including Bluebeard, Escamillo, Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Don Giovanni, Barnaba (Gioconda), Jochanaan (Salome), Basilio (La fiamma), Nabucco, Macbeth, Rigoletto, Count Luna, Germont, Count Ankarström, Don Carlo (La forza del destino), Amonasro, the Marquis of Posa, Ford, The Dutchman, Wotan (Das Rheingold). He has enhanced his repertoire at other opera houses too. His international career began in Trieste, Italy in the role of Nabucco. Since then he has appeared in several major theatres in Salzburg (Grosses Festspielhaus), Edinburgh (Festival Theatre), Glasgow, Warsaw, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Valencia, Leipzig, Karlsruhe, Wiesbaden, Naples and Rome. He has sung at important festivals in St. Margarethen, Schwerin, Perth, Xanten, Savonlinna, the Dorset Opera and Rotterdam Ahoy. He has worked with outstanding directors like Pier Alli, Beppe De Tommasi, Hugo De Ana, Gianfranco De Bosio, Mario Monicelli, Stefano Vizioli, Marek Weiss-Grzesinski, Barnard Broca, Uwe Wand, Henning Brockhaus and Olivier Tambosi. He has sung under the baton of leading composers including Alain Lombard, Sir Richard Armstrong, Hubert Soudant, Tiziani Severini, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Jacek Kaspszik, Will Humburg, Udo Zimmermann, Marcello Viotti, Lamberto Gardelli, Piergiorgio Morandi and Gianfranco Masin. He has appeared at concerts and oratorio performances at places like London (Barbican Hall), Manchester (Free Trade Hall), Vienna (Musikverein, Schauspielhaus), Madrid (Auditorio Nacional), Zürich (Tonhalle) with conductors including Tamás Vásáry, Kent Nagano, John Neshling, Osmo Vänskä, Uriel Segal and Günther Neuhold. He has made three recordings of Bartóks Bluebeards Castle with Günther Neuhold, Andreas Delfs and János Kovács as conductors. Further recordings include Erkels Bánk bán (Petur bán) with Géza Oberfrank; Galuppis Il caffé di campagna (Fumana) with Fabio Pirona; Mascagnis Lodoletta (Franz) with Charles Rosenkrans; Brahmss German Requiem with Tamás Vásáry; and Nabucco with Walter Attanasi. Films: Traviata (DVD for UNESCO, conducted by Riccardo Capasso) and Nabucco (DVD - Opera Companions, directed by Bernard Broca and conducted by Walter Attanasi, published in the Netherlands in 2003).
