He was Music Director of the Opéra d'Avignon from 1975 to 1981, Alain Guingal is today considered one of the world's leading experts of the French repertoire. He has also conducted on the podium of prestigious international theatres including the Opéra National de Paris, Wiener Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Munich, Washington Opera, Teatro Real in Madrid and Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro del Maggio Musicale di Firenze, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Teatro San Carlo di Napoli.

Recent performances include Manon at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, La forza del destino, La Gioconda and Aida at the Opera Royal de Wallonie in Liège, La traviata and Roberto Devereux at the Opéra de Marseille, Werther in Las Palmas, Les contes d’Hoffmann in Bilbao, Mireille at the Opéra de Toulon, Don Quichotte and Werther in Tokyo, Thaïs in Oviedo, Lakmé at the Opera de Nice, Les Pécheurs de perles at the Teatro Municipal de Santiago del Chile, Manon at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Carmen at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and in Avignon and Poliuto at the Opéra de Marseille.

During his long career he has conducted acclaimed productions of Thais at Teatro Municipal de São Paulo, Simon Boccanegra, Madama Butterfly and Mireille at the Théâtre Municipal de Avignon, Donizetti’s Poliuto at Opéra de Marseille, Auber’s La Muette de Portici at Teatro Petruzelli in Bari, Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Lucia di Lammermoor at Opéra de Marseille, Carmen at Festival d’Opéra de Avenches, Rigoletto in Antibes, Massenet's Manon at the Opéra de Monte-carlo, Werther at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest and Rigoletto at the Théâtre Antique de Orange.

Recent successes include Rigoletto at the Korea National Opera of Seoul, Manon at ABAO in Bilbao and Roméo et Juliette at the Operà de Nice and at Teatro Calderon in Valladolid, Werther at the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv.
