Giuseppe Giacosa

librettist

(1847-1906)
Giuseppe Giacosa was an Italian dramatist and librettist who, jointly with Luigi Illica, is credited with the librettos for Puccini's Manon Lescaut, La bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly. Giacoso first studied law in Turin, but with the tremendous success of his play Una partita a scacchi in 1873, he was able to launch his literary career. He started working together with Puccini and Illica in 1893, when they asked for him to assist with the libretto for Manon Lescaut. Their collaborative work also bore fruit in the shape of the librettos for La bohème (1896), Tosca (1900) and Madama Butterfly (1904). Illica would prepare the first version of the librettos, and then Giacosa would refine them and rework them into verse form.
