Hungarian State Opera

Operas in English and Hungarian, with English and Hungarian surtitles

No doubt many still remember that great night at the Opera in 2018, when it dared to perform the opera Porgy and Bess with white actors. Everyone could feel that the Opera is doing nothing beside performing a creation with universal values and meaning in its original language, which was composed by (as if this were important) a white composer from a European family, George Gershwin. Still nobody dared give the Opera a vote of confidence for its performance. The Opera reasoned that if African American singers were singing Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle in Hungarian, that too is a triumph of universal human values. And now a great personage, the world-famous Sir Willard White, a black bass signer, will be coming and showing us how it is possible for him to sing Bluebeard on the same night as our Hungarian Porgy, András Palerdi, will sing excerpts from Gershwin’s work.
