Korean Natioanl Symphony Orchestra
Formerly known as the Korean Symphony Orchestra, the Korean National Symphony Orchestra was established in 1985 as the first private orchestra in the nation. In 2001, the orchestra was designated as an affiliated organization by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, establishing itself as the prominent theater orchestra, embracing orchestral music, ballet and opera under its belt. With the wide array of repertoire and independent musical core, the orchestra seeks to transition into a new platform for the musicians of the next generation be renewing itself as the Korean National Symphony Orchestra in 2022, and to undertake its responsibility in the history of symphonic music in Korea.
The Korean National Symphony Orchestra endeavors to fulfill the public’s desire for cultural enjoyment through more than a hundred concerts per year and expands the base of classical music by crossing boundaries between film, gaming and online concerts. It became the first orchestra in the country to have advanced to the OTT (Over-the-Top) service platform and a high-quality archiving project based on 4K resolution video production technology and three-dimensional, multi-faceted acoustic recording technology, pioneering a new listening culture that goes hand in hand with a new media era. The Korean National Symphony Orchestra is taking the lead in fostering future generations of performers, composers, and conductors, the three pillars of any orchestra. The ‘Korean National Symphony International Orchestra Academy’ educates and nurtures professional orchestral musicians, the ‘Composers’ Atelier’ fosters a new generation of composers, and the ‘KNSO International Conducting Competition’ seeks to find a new generation of conductors among worldwide candidates. The Korean National Symphony Orchestra dreams of a sustainable future for classical music by supporting a variety of projects that foster the growth and development of the next generation.
Chung Chi-Yong / The Conductor
One of the most sought-after conductors of his generation in Korea, Chi-Yong Chung is highly regarded for his vivid interpretations, deep musical insights, strong ensemble leadership, and virtuoso baton technique. He began his piano studies at age five and later entered the prestigious Seoul National University School of Music as a composition major. He then graduated from the conducting class of Michael Gielen at the Salzburg Mozarteum in Austria. Chung served as Assistant Conductor of the Salzburg International Summer Festival and was awarded the Austrian Culture Ministry Award upon graduation. Following appearance as guest conductor of the Radio Symphony of Leipzig, Prague Radio Symphony, Munich Symphony and Michigan State Symphony, he made his debut in Korea with the Seoul Philharmonic. He has conducted numerous Korean orchestras such as the Changwon Philharmonic, Incheon Philharmonic where he served as music director. He is also renowned for his work as an opera conductor. In addition to leading many operas of the Italian, French and German repertoires, he has premiered new Korean works for the stage including ‘Apron-Weared Soldiers’, ‘A Buckwheat Flower Season’ and ‘Kim Koo and Interim Government in Shanghai’. He works for the School of Music at the Korean National University of the Arts, where he is leading the education of the next generation of Korean musicians. Among his many distinctions, Chung received Young Artist Prize of Korean Culture Ministry, Music Association of Korea Award, and the Korean Music Journalists Association Award.
