South African soprano Johanni van Oostrum is acclaimed for her expressive interpretations of Richard Strauss, Richard Wagner, and Leoš Janáček.

She recently sang Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes at the Dutch National Opera and performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the Wiener Symphoniker under Philippe Jordan. Recent engagements include Senta in Der fliegende Holländer in Trondheim and Kristiansand, Sieglinde in Die Walküre with the Orchestre National de France, Elsa in Lohengrin at Semperoper Dresden, and Peri in Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri in Paris and Vienna. In summer 2025, she performed Senta in a new production of Der fliegende Holländer at Oper im Steinbruch in St. Margarethen.

Engagements in 25/25 include Elsa in a new production of Wagner’s Lohengrin at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest, Leonore in Fidelio as well as Queen Elizabeth I in the world premiere of Brett Dean’s opera Of One Blood at the Bavarian State Opera.

Van Oostrum has performed as Agathe in Der Freischütz, the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, Salome, Grete in Der ferne Klang, Leonore in Fidelio, Jenůfa, and Marietta in Die tote Stadt. She has collaborated with renowned conductors like Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Asher Fisch, Bertrand de Billy, Philippe Jordan, Kirill Petrenko, and Daniel Harding, among others.

Her accolades include first prize at the Erna Spoorenberg Dutch Vocal Competition and the 2018 Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Best Female Performance.
