Born in 1976 in Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureș), Sándor Balla studied at that city's High School of the Arts before enrolling first at Transilvania University in Brassó (Braşov) to study clarinet under Daniel Theodoru, and later in the voice programme at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca), where his teacher was Alexandru Fărcaş. In 1998, he joined the chorus at Opera Braşov, moving on in 2000 to the Târgu Mureș State Philharmonic Orchestra, where he sang both as a soloist and a chorus member. He remained there until 2006, when he signed as a soloist with the Elena Teodorini Opera in Craiova. He is a member of the company of the Hungarian Opera of Cluj-Napoca. He has taken part in courses run by Corneliu Murgu, Mariana Nicolesvo and Gheorghe Roşu, as well as in concerts and tours in Austria, Germany, France and the United States.
His principal roles include Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Enrico Ashton (Lucia di Lammermoor), Fiorello (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Boccaccio (Suppee's Giovanni Boccaccio), the title role of Falstaff, Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Silvio (Pagliacci), Malatesta (Don Pasquale).
