Kasyan Goleizovsky
choreographer
(1892-1970)
Kasyan Goleizovsky was a Russian choreographer and dancer and one of the pioneering figures in the Muscovite avant garde movement in ballet of the 1920s whose innovations had a major influence on many of his successors, most notably George Balanchine. He completed his formal education in both Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and after spending years in the schools of the Mariinsky and Bolshoi theatres, he set out to put his own ideas into practice, founding his own studio in 1916. After finding during the 1920s that censorship was hindering his career, he commenced a study of Russian folklore in the 30's and started to create work that was in line with Party doctrine for agitprop theatres, sporting events and folk dance productions.
