Carnival's parting words – the OPERA says farewell to the past 9 years at the Erkel Theatre

The ensembles and a dozen leading soloists of the OPERA including Eszter Sümegi, Péter Balczó, Gergely Boncsér, and Kolos Kováts are to appear at a grand gala concert that showcases the most memorable moments at the Erkel Theatre since its 2013 reopening. The 5 March 2022 gala features the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra under the baton of first conductor Gergely Kesselyák.

There are two first, two second, a third prize winner and two finalists of the international ballet competition TANZOLYMP held in Berlin among the students of the OPERA’s ballet school, the Hungarian National Ballet Institute, meaning they could also perform at the gala closing the event. The young dancers studying in the ballet programme of the Hungarian State Opera launched six years ago achieved these extraordinary results competing with 350 contestants from 28 countries.

Debussy's opera returns to the Hungarian State Opera repertoire after fifty years

A new production of Pelléas and Mélisande by Kirsten Dehlholm and Hotel Pro Forma is presented at the Eiffel Art Studios featuring Zsolt Haja / Máté Fülep, Polina Pasztircsák and István Kovács from 25 February 2022. The Hungarian State Opera is conducted by internationally renowned Frédéric Chaslin.

Love in the time of quarantine – Love Adrift at the Eiffel Art Studios

Following a hiatus of six decades, the Hungarian State Opera presents a new production of a once popular piece by Hungarian composer Ede Poldini. Love Adrift (also known as Hochzeit im Fasching, or Wedding in Carnival Time) returns to the repertoire on 19 February 2022 at the Eiffel Art Studios staged by András Almási-Tóth and conducted by Szabolcs Sándor.

Opera House Reopening

After the restoration work at the Budapest Opera House on Andrássy Avenue that lasted nearly five seasons, the moment everyone, including international audiences, have been waiting for is finally here. Starting on 12 March 2022, the historic building restored to its original glory and augmented with the most modern technologies will not only be home to productions that have not been performed for quite some time, but successful performances of recent years will also take their worthy place at the Opera House, also known as the Ybl Palace after its architect, Miklós Ybl.

The OPERA presents a double bill of Italian stories by legendary Hungarian composers

The Hungarian State Opera regards it as a mission to revive works at the Eiffel Art Studios by composers who lived before World War II. In January 2021, a double bill featuring Tante Simona by Ernst von Dohnányi and Le luthier de Crémone by Jenő Hubay premiered online, now audiences get the chance to see the two the late romantic operas live from 5 February 2022 staged by Bence Varga and conducted by Oliver von Dohnányi.

After a hiatus of 110 years, La fille du régiment returns to the OPERA

In a production staged by Csaba Polgár incorporating spoken dialogues by András Péter Kovács, La fille du régiment returns to the repertoire of the Hungarian State Opera on 14 January 2022. The cast at the Erkel Theatre features outstanding Hungarian soloists Zita Szemere, Gergely Boncsér, Mária Farkasréti / Atala Schöck, and András Palerdi under the baton of Fabrizio Maria Carminati.

Klára Kolonits in bravura roles in the new Hungarian State Opera production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann

After a hiatus of 25 years, Offenbach's magnum opus returns to the Hungarian State Opera repertoire in a much-anticipated staging by Kriszta Székely. The production of Les Contes Hoffmann is presented in a double cast at the Erkel Theatre, the 4 December 2021 premiere features Klára Kolonits, Boldizsár László and Péter Kálmán under the baton of Gergely Kesselyák.

The Imaginary Invalid or the Cabal of Hypocrites continues the cooperation between the Hungarian State Opera and OperaVision

Following the 2020 world premiere of János Vajda's new opera based on works by Bulgakov and Molière, a new performance by the Hungarian State Opera is streamed live on OperaVision from 8 p.m. on 19 November 2021. The production featuring András Hábetler, Éva Bátori, Bernadett Wiedemann, Lilla Horti and György Hanczár, directed by Máté Szabó and conducted by János Kovács is available to watch for six months on the international platform.

Tickets are on sale for the early 2022 season

Due to ongoing restoration works of the Neo-renaissance Opera House in Andrássy út, performances of the Hungarian State Opera take place at its two other venues until March 2022. However, tickets are now available for our 2022 performances, including those held in the Opera House. Please, don’t forget to bring your masks with you, either.

Éva Marton’s masterclass on Die Frau ohne Schatten / Ariadne auf Naxos at the Opera

Due to technical reasons, the masterclass will take place in autumn 2022. The Hungarian State Opera and internationally renowned Kossuth Award recipient opera singer, awarded the Order of Saint Stephen of Hungary and recognised as a National Artist of Hungary, is hosting a masterclass for soprano singers on Richard Strauss’s two operas, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Ariadne auf Naxos for artists singing, covering or studying the roles. The deadline for applying to the training to be held between 7 and 11 March 2022 at the Erkel Theatre, is 31 January 2022.

Opera House to reopen, tickets and flexible subscriptions available

Tickets for Hungarian State Opera performances between 1 January and 31 July 2022 go on sale from 16 November 2021. Following a reconstruction of five years, the historic Opera House awaits fans of opera and ballet again beside the Erkel Theatre and the Bánffy Stage of the Eiffel Art Studios.
