In the 2022/2023 season, the Hungarian State Opera House is launching a new series of intimate aria and song recitals featuring internationally renowned opera singers with piano accompaniment. On the opening night of the series, Simon Keenlyside will perform at the Miklós Bánffy Stage of the Eiffel Eiffel Art Studios on 16 October 2022, followed by Ildar Abdrazakov at the Opera House on 30 October.
Update: due to the illness of Andrea Rost, the concert at the Erkel Theatre on 15 October 2022 is cancelled. A possible new date is being negotiated with our co-production partners, but in the current situation affecting the operation of cultural institutions, this may take longer. Tickets purchased online are refunded automatically. Iconic operatic roles and adaptations of popular songs feature in the programme of Andrea Rost's birthday gala concert in two movements. The internationally renowned soprano appears at the Erkel Theatre on 15 October 2022, accompanied by the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra conducted by Domonkos Héja, and Hot Jazz Band.
The Roman Republic, occupied by Spanish and Neapolitan forces at the dawn of the Napoleonic Wars, is replaced by the suffocating atmosphere of the communist dictatorship of the 1950s in the new production of the Hungarian State Opera. Director general Szilveszter Ókovács's second staging, conducted by Gergely Kesselyák, in a double cast, with Csilla Boross and Zsuzsanna Ádám in the title role, will be first presented on September 24th and 28th, 2022 at the Opera House in Budapest.
The Hungarian National Ballet, the 138-year-old official ballet company of the Hungarian State Opera, announces an audition upon invitation to be held from 10:00 on 29 January 2023 at the Opera House for immediate openings as well as contracts starting 15 July 2023 (depending on the applicants’ work visa requirements).
In her first-ever appearance at the Opera House, Budapest, the world-famous star soprano will perform songs by Debussy, Dvořák, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Richard Strauss, as well as excerpts from operas by Tchaikovsky, Leoncavallo, and Offenbach. The artist is accompanied on the piano by Pavel Nebolsin. The programme also features mezzo-soprano Elena Maximova and violinist Kurt Mitterfellner. Dear esteemed audience, As part of the Hungarian government’s comprehensive economic measures in relation to the war in Ukraine, the ministry maintaining the Hungarian State Opera House gave notice of the reduction of 600 million HUF from the theatre’s annual budget. As a result of previous and further expected measures for savings, OPERA expects a total budget reduction of 1 billion HUF for the year 2022 and 500 million HUF for the year 2023. The recent increase in utility costs and vulnerability to currency exchange rates have placed additional burden on our theatre.
The most beautiful excerpts of Italian opera are presented by Fabio Sartori, special guest start of the Tenorissimo festive opera gala. The renowned tenor is partnered by leading soloists of the Hungarian State Opera: Zsuzsanna Ádám, Csilla Boross, Gabriella Létay Kiss, Orsolya Sáfár, and Andrea Szántó. The performance organised at 20:00 on 19 August 2022 at the Opera House also features the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of general music director Balázs Kocsár.
La finta giardiniera (The Pretend Garden-Girl) by Mozart is presented in a cooperation with Opera Neo San Diego at the Hungarian State Opera. The comic opera directed by András Almási-Tóth features young American and Hungarian talents under the baton of Péter Kozma can be seen before the American premiere at the Eiffel Art Studios on 1 July 2022.
Following the 2021 online premiere of the five-act, Modena version of Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece directed by Frank Hilbrich is now presented in front of live audiences at the refurbished Opera House. Due to the illness of Matthew Polenzani, the series beginning on 5 June 2022 features Carlo Ventre and Adroján Pataki in the title role. The ensembles of the OPERA are conducted by Leonardo Sini.
For the first time in front of a live Budapest audience, the Hungarian National Ballet presents Don Juan by renowned French choreographer Thierry Malandain, and Firebirds by Seregi Award winner Marianna Venekei in their new mixed bill. In Balance also features popular repertoire pieces, Petite Mort and Six Dances by Jiří Kylián at the OPERA's Eiffel Art Studios from 3 June 2022.
Directed by Géza M. Tóth, starring István Kovácsházi, Szilvia Rálik, Károly Szemerédy, Lilla Horti and Géza Gábor, and conducted by general music director Balázs Kocsár, the Hungarian State Opera presents the final episode of Wagner’s monumental Ring cycle on 15 May 2022.
Following an online premiere last year, Mozart's popular singspiel is now presented live on 29 April 2022 in a new production by Miklós H. Vecsei featuring video projections by the group Kiégő Izzók – Glowing Bulbs and a new Hungarian translation by Dániel Varró. Cast includes Erika Miklósa, Péter Balczó, András Palerdi, Rita Rácz, János Szerekován and József Wunderlich under the baton of Martin Rajna.
