Directed by Vajk Szente, Péter Balczó, Orsolya Sáfár and Péter Kálmán star in the staged world premiere of the opera-musical The Master and Margarita by Levente Gyöngyösi. The spectacular Hungarian State Opera production conducted by Gábor Hollerung featuring sets and costumes by Kentaur can only be seen online once this season, on 13 February 2021 at 8:00 p.m. CET in the Opera Stream series on jegy.hu.
After a hiatus of over 40 years, Vasily Vainonen's spectacular ballet The Flames of Paris returns to the repertoire reconceived by international ballet master and choreographer Michael Messerer. The production featuring soloists Tatiana Melnik and Gergely Leblanc fits perfectly into the Hungarian State Opera's The Muse of France Season. The exclusive premiere can only be seen online once this season through jegy.hu on 6 February 2021 at 8:00 p.m. CET.
The Hungarian State Opera regards it as a mission to revive works at the Eiffel Art Studios by composers who lived before World War II. In the new paid stream service of the Opera, a double bill featuring Tante Simona by Ernst von Dohnányi and Le luthier de Crémone by Jenő Hubay can be viewed from 7:00 p.m. (CET) on 30 January 2021. The new production directed by Bence Varga is conducted by Oliver von Dohnányi.
The paid Opera Stream service continues in February with a selection of a classical ballet, an opera-musical as well as contemporary pieces. Tickets for the performances available to view only once due to the pandemic can be purchased on jegy.hu.
On 23 January 2021, from 7:00 p.m., the Hungarian State Opera presents Mozart's popular singspiel in a new production by Miklós H. Vecsei featuring video projections by the group Glowing Bulbs and a new Hungarian translation by Dániel Varró. Due to the pandemic, this performance can only be seen once this season – online, with soloists Erika Miklósa, Péter Balczó, Géza Gábor, Rita Rácz, János Szerekován and József Wunderlich. The ensembles of the Opera are conducted by Péter Halász.
From January 2021, a new, paid stream service is presented by the Hungarian State Opera. The series of streams including popular repertoire pieces and new productions made necessary by the lockdown, can be viewed from 7:00 p.m. on Saturdays through jegy.hu. Beside the new paid stream service, the Opera continues to stream free performances as well on its Facebook page.
Of the many cancelled shows of 2020 due to the regulations regarding the pandemic, none is so missed by the audience as the irreplaceable Christmas fairy-tale ballet of The Nutcracker. As a special treat by the Hungarian State Opera, a full performance is made available for one day in the OperaLive series on 24 December 2020 on Facebook and Origo.hu.
It is hereby announced that in accordance with the current regulations on the pandemic, all public performances and programmes of the Hungarian State Opera are cancelled. The performances of the OperaLive series streamed live free on Facebook are to continue. During the festive season, complete performances of The Nutcracker and La bohème as well as an earlier New Year's concert will also become available to watch. In January 2021, a new paid livestream service is also going to be introduced.

The Muse of France Season at the Hungarian State Opera cannot pass without touching upon the life and work of one of the greatest French playwrights, Molière. His final comedy has been turned into an opera by Hungarian composer János Vajda, who has also incorporated elements from a play about Molière by Bulgakov. The Imaginary Invalid or The Cabal of Hypocrites can be seen for the first time as part of CAFe Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival on 30 October 2020.
With the opening of the Eiffel Art Studios, Hungarian musical life gains a new venue in the 2020/21 season. It gives the opportunity for the revival of older concert traditions. On 22 October, the once popular genre of song recital is renewed at the Miklós Bánffy Stage featuring soloist Klára Kolonits.

The most successful of Hungarian rock opera by Levente Szörényi and János Bródy for the past 40 years is to premiere with symphonic orchestrations by Levente Gyöngyösi and the participation of opera singers at the Hungarian State Opera. The production is staged by Miklós Szinetár at the Erkel Theatre, the ensembles of the Opera are conducted by Gergely Kesselyák and Ádám Cser.
Following the favourable results of the extensive testing for corona virus among the ensembles of the Hungarian State Opera, the October rehearsals have been resumed. Therefore, the premiere of Stephen, the King on 17 October 2020 and the series of Swan Lake beginning with 30 October 2020 can go ahead as planned. Due to the COVID-19 situation, however, the institute has modified its November programmes announced earlier.
The newest dance pieces created for the Hungarian National Ballet include choreographies for the quarantine hit by András Péter Kovács, and the music of Animal Cannibals. Staying Home by Adrienn Vetési and Joyful! by Karina Sarkissova are on stage of the Eiffel Art Studios from 11 October 2020.
Featuring Bori Keszei in the title role, the Hungarian State Opera presents Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea on 10 October 2020 with new orchestrations by Máté Bella. The production is directed by András Almási-Tóth, conducted by Gergely Vajda.
The new, versatile online series of the Hungarian State Opera kicked off on 20 September 2020 after a new temporary lockdown (until 17 October) had to be implemented by the institute to protect its artists and audience. On the one hand, this new alternative programme attempts to make up for the cancelled performances and tries to provide operatic experience for the fans of the genre. On the other hand, the new arrangement is the safest possible solution to protect the artists from contracting the virus.
It is hereby announced that following the successful premieres of recent days (Cactuses, Salome, Dead Man Walking), beginning with 17 September 2020, the Hungarian State Opera is compelled to suspend all rehearsals until 1 October due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases. Consequently, all performances are cancelled until 17 October 2020.
