Social music listening session

Ede Poldini (1869-1957) premiered his two-act comic opera at the Hungarian State Opera House on 16 February 1926. Although Ernő Vajda had created the opera's libretto more than a decade previously, World War I and other circumstances delayed Poldini's efforts to finish composing the music. The premiere was an enormous triumph, and Wedding at Carnival ran for more than 100 performances. It is an uncommon repertoire piece, one of those few Hungarian operas that proved successful abroad as well when it was presented in Vienna, Dresden and London. This opera set in a Hungarian manor house showed off the composer's outstanding character sketches of its aristocratic inhabitants, who are all recognisable from the musical motifs that surround them.
