István Andrejcsik was born in 1955, in Esztergom. After first singing in the Honvéd Male Choir, he graduated from the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in 1983 as one of the legendary Mrs Ferenc Révhegyi's last students. After completing his studies, Géza Oberfrank signed him to work at the National Theatre of Szeged, where he made his debut as Silvano. A professor at the University of Szeged's Faculty of Music, he also taught at the Liszt Academy for many years. He has taken part in master classes held by Gábor Carelli, Yevgeny Nesterenko, Els Bolkestein and Pavel Lisitsian. He was a finalist at the 's-Hertogenbosh Singing Competition and took fourth place at the Schumann Competition in Weimar. His principal roles include Onegin, Almaviva (in Le nozze di Figaro), the Dutchman (Der fliegende Holländer), Macbeth, Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Morales, Escamillo and Dancaïre (Carmen), Don Giovanni, Guglielmo/Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte) and the quadruple baritone role in Les contes d'Hoffmann. He has also delivered outstanding portrayals in operettas (including in Countess Maritza, Sybil and The Merry Widow). He has won many honours and recognitions, including the Bartók-Pásztory Award (1989), the Viktor Vaszy Award (1995 and 2005), the Gyula Juhász Award (2004), the Dömötör Award (2005) and the Artisjus Award (2005). He was selected the “singer of the year” in Szeged in both 1995 and 2005.
