Gyula Jármai began his musical education by studying piano at Sopron's music school (1960-1969) and Győr's High School of Music (1969-1972). He graduated from the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy in 1977 with a degree in high school voice pedagogy and choral conducting after studying under department heads István Párkai and Zoltán Vásárhelyi, and then went on to earn another degree, this one in conducting, under the guidance of András Kórodi in 1980. As a distinguished specialist in the ballet repertoire, he conducted premieres in Budapest and also took part in guest performances abroad. He also compiled music for ballets, including for Anna Karenina (Tchaikovsky-Pártay), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Mendelssohn-Seregi) and The Moor of Venice (Schubert-Pártay). In addition, he functioned as the conductor for the Educators Symphony Orchestra from 1981 and, in 1986, also took up the helm of the Veszprém Symphony Orchestra.
