Born in The Hague, Joop Caboort started working at the Netherlands Dans Theater in 1965, as an electrician. In 1970, he was named the company's technical director. While in this post, where he remained until 1995, he handled the lighting designs for the NDT's productions and, in this capacity, worked on nearly 350 choreographies, including works by Jiří Kylián, Maurice Béjart, Hans van Manen and Nacho Duato. He has also worked as a freelance lighting designer with Birgit Cullberg and on numerous spoken-word drama and opera productions. He has worked with such companies as The Royal Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet and at such venues as the Royal Opera House, the Wiener Staatsoper and the New York Metropolitan Opera.
