Gyula Kunszery pursued his education in Budapest, earning his teaching degree in Hungarian and German, followed by a doctorate in Hungarian literature, linguistics and aesthetics. His poems and novellas first started appearing in the mid-1920s, and the '30s saw him winning novella-writing competitions in West and New Times. He published his anti-Hitler views in columns in Hungarian Nation and Today and returned to work at the former after 1945. By the early '60s, he was regularly writing for Hungarian Journal, Life and Literature and Life and Science as well as continuing his work in literary history. Ferenc Farkas crafted his fable The Magic Cupboard into a comic opera that was successful performed both in Hungary and abroad.
