Róbert Laczkó Vass was born in the Transylvanian town of Gyergyóremete (Remetea) in 1976. After studying at the Benedek Elek Teacher Training School in Székelyudvar (Odorheiu Secuiesc), he enrolled in the theatre department of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca) to earn an acting degree under András Csíky and Attila Keresztes. Since the year 2000, he has been both a member of the Kolozsvár Hungarian Theatre and a regular collaborator and singer at the Kolozsvár Hungarian Opera. Between 2000 and 2008, he also taught speech technique the city, in the university's drama programme. Roles he has sung at the Kolozsvár Hungarian Opera include Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Sibuk (in György Orbán's Prince Pikkó), Valerio (in János Vajda's Leonce und Lena), Goro (Madama Butterfly), Lillas Pastia (Carmen), the knight Gyula (in Erkel's Sarolta), Gherardo (Gianni Schicchi), Cipolla (Mario and the Magician) and Ficsúr (Somewhere in Europe). He made his debut at the Hungarian State Opera House in 2007, in the role of Kuruzs in Mrs Karnyó.
