Born in Budapest in 1977, Máté Sólyom-Nagy graduated from the Béla Bartók High School of Music in 1997 and from the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in 2002, with an honours degree in opera. A DAAD scholarship took him to the Hochshule für Musik Stuttgart for the 2002/03 academic year to study under Júlia Hamari. He has participated in voice master classes with László Polgár, Nicholas Clapton, Júlia Hamari and Walter C. Moore, and has also studied acting technique under Mathias Oldag and Martina Veh. He was a member of the Ars Classica Chamber Opera from 1998 until 2002 and of the Auris Opera Company between 2000 and 2002. Since 2000, he has appeared as Papageno in Debrecen and Schaunard in Miskolc, as well as singing both Papageno and the role of Elemér Tábory in The Stork Calif at the Hungarian State Opera House. He sang in Peter Konwitschny's production of Don Giovanni at Berlin's Komische Oper in 2005 and has been a soloist with Theater Erfurt since 2002. He has made guest appearances in Amsterdam, Nice, St. Moritz, Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca), Bern, Bruges and London. He won third prize at the Saverio Mercadante Singing Competition in Altamura in 1999, another third prize at the Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský International Vocal Competition in Trnava in 2000 and third prize in the Junior and Song categories at the Antonin Dvořák Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary in 2000. The Artisjus Foundation presented him with awards for his outstanding interpretation of contemporary Hungarian musical works in 1999 and 2006.
