Tamás Vayer studied at Budapest's Academy of Arts and Crafts between 1960 and 1965, in which year he became set designer at Mafilm Hungarian Film Studios, where he remained until 1989. Between 1978 and 1986, he also worked as an artistic adviser and artistic director at the Scenography Centre, and also designed the sets for numerous Hungarian television and film dramas. He started working with theatres in the '60s, creating designs for the National Theatre, Madách Theatre, Ódry Stage, the Opera House and the national theatres of Miskolc and Pécs. From 1989 to 1992 he was employed at the National Theatre in Budapest while working as an artistic adviser for Mafilm. His designs for the stage are characterised by a precise sense of proportion and the confidently tasteful application of stylistic elements from the modern fine arts.
At the Hungarian State Opera he designed the sets for Tosca (1988).
